The Royal Hotel (1869-2012)
The Royal Hotel is one of the two remaining inns still in Warren today, and has been a popular destination for locals and travelling families for the past 143 years.
The Royal Hotel was first built upon two plots of land upon the main road, (or what is now known as modern day Dubbo Street,) which was purchased in 1868 by a Mr John Colley, who bought the area upon the ideals of building a travellers inn. Although expensive, the hotel did not take long to build and a license to run the bar was obtained at the official opening in in 1872, and Mr Colley hired a co-manager for two years to help with the business; a man known as William Pratt.
After a number of ownership changes, the hotel eventually ended up in the hands of Henry Back, in early 1892. This proved to be a disastrous choice on behalf of the owner, as a great fire was recorded to sweep the town in mid 1895, which completely destroyed the Royal Hotel and a number of other main buildings within the main area of the town, and the owner of a new shoe shop was found guilty with starting the fire. Around this time, a previous owner Mr Thompson died by drowning shortly after selling the Albion to Henry Back. After the fire, the property was transferred to the widow of Mr Thompson along with a contracter who were charged with the jobs of rebuilding the Royal Hotel, this time in brick.
The hotel was eventually revuilt in 1896, and Mrs Thompson charged the ownership of the hotel over to Annie Maude Gosper, who soon returned the transfer to Mrs Thompson after disputes in running the Royal Hotel, and to this day it has remained a popular pub and hotel for the residents of Warren and travelling people coming through the town.
